Island isolation

Island isolation

St. Helena is the closest I’ve ever come to living in a scarcity economy. Where things ‘s like a bottle of honey cannot be bought. It’s not that it’s expensive, itnot that you can’t get your preferred brand or that you have to go out of you way to find it, to it’s that there is none to be had. And they don’t know when there will be more.

Okay, shortage of honey is not exactly a life-threatening hardship, but that’s just one example. Life here is constrained by what arrives by ship. Which comes in from Cape Town once a month. Or so. And when your supply of something runs out, you do without.

It changes your view of the world.
