We got up at 6:30, wanting to get going by sunrise, about 8am at this time of the year as far North as we are (at the border with Canada).

It had dropped below freezing, Vingilótë covered in a sheet of ice, making that whole “one hand for yourself, and once for the boat” a very harsh necessity.

It took a bit: the dock lines had frozen into their knots on the cleats, the roller cleats on Vingilótë had frozen shut (we double back two dock lines for departure, and everything had to be done carefully and deliberately as Vingilótë, the dock, and our gang plank were covered in a thin sheet of ice.
