Whoever it was that said “It’s always darkest just before dawn” has clearly never done an overnight sail. Just before dawn it is spectacularly beautiful. Since I have the 6-8 am watch, I get to experience all the sunrises, and I swear each one is more beautiful than the day before. (Well, excepting the last couple days where it was so overcast that I never did see the sunrise). The eastern sky full of gold and silver and scarlet, pink and blue and purple clouds, turning the sails from grey to silver to gold, shafts of golden light appearing over the horizon preluding the rise of the great bright disk itself. Words fail me. Pictures can’t capture it.
